Kemp back to Dodgers in 5-player deal

Both the Dodgers and Braves benefited from their salary dumps Kemp back to Dodgers in 5-player deal
Edward Snyder | 17 December, 2017, 03:51

The trade appears to be an attempt by the Dodgers to shed payroll, and Kemp's second go-round in L.A. could be short-lived. The team has been taxed the past five years, including a $30 million penalty for 2017 for going over the $197 million luxury-tax threshold.

Braves acquired RHP Brandon McCarthy, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, LHP Scott Kazmir, INF Charlie Culberson and cash considerations from the Dodgers for OF Matt Kemp.

For Kemp it means a return to his old stomping grounds, at least temporarily, having spent the first 8 years of his career with the Dodgers from 2006-2014.

McCarthy, 34, was 6-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) for the Dodgers last season, missing half the season for blister problems before returning late in the season with his 94-mph fastball intact and a new slider to go with it. He did not pitch previous year due to a hip injury.

But the Dodgers will be willing to deploy many more starters than that - they made liberal use of the 10-day disabled list in 2017 - to get through the season.

The trade is likely a way for both teams to break even out on bad contracts and bring the Dodgers under budget for 2018. Kemp will make $21.5 million in 2018 and another $21.5 million in 2019. On Saturday, they moved significantly closer to that goal. Culberson gives them a solid utility man for the bench, while Gonzalez may find himself being designated for assignment with the first base position filled with perennial All-Star Freddie Freeman.

The Braves have confirmed the trade via their official Twitter account. With the Miami Marlins headed for a terrible 2018 campaign the Braves can, at the very least, show their fanbase that not only are they no longer the worst team in the National League East, but that their future is brighter than it has been in a long time.

The Dodgers reportedly sent $4.5 million to balance the two salary dumps.
