You Can Manage Your Identity on Facebook Using Face Recognition

Using facial recognition technology, Facebook can alert you to any photos in which you're visible regardless of whether or not you've been tagged. Users will then have the option of tagging themselves, remaining untagged or reaching out to the person who posted the photo if there are concerns.

It builds on the existing machine learning and AI that powers another of Facebook's photo features, tagging suggestions. Finally, the company is also going to use facial recognition to describe pictures to the visually impaired; someone looking at a photo using a screen-reader can hear which of their friends are in the picture by name. However, Facebook notes that if your tag suggestions setting is now set to "none", then your default face recognition setting will be set to "off" and will remain that way until you decide to change it.

This would allow Facebook to implement more features that use facial recognition, such as account recovery, though that remains to be seen.

You control whether Facebook can recognize you in photos and videos. Facebook still respects the privacy settings of people posting photos, so you won't get a notification for photos when you're not in the audience.

Facebook says that "these new features help you find photos that you're not tagged in and help you detect when others might be attempting to use your image as their profile picture".

The new feature, which Facebook frames as a control measure for a user's image, is one of three new applications of facial recognition technology the company announced Tuesday. Although it does not appear to have been implemented yet, Facebook will soon allow users to turn off facial recognition on their accounts with a single switch.

While now able to identify most users in head-on photos, the technology won't recognise people whose faces are obscured, in shadow or at unusual angles. "We listen carefully to feedback from people who use Facebook, as well as from experts in the field", Sherman wrote.

Facebook also introduced new tools to try to prevent harassment Tuesday. If you're a little sensitive about how often you show up in pics on the internet, Facebook has a new privacy tool that may interest you.

The objective of the feature, according to Facebook, is to help users better manage their online identity.
