The US ambassador to the Netherlands declared "fake news" to the claim he once said there were "no-go zones" in the country - but quickly backtracked after being shown footage of himself from two years ago.

A Dutch reporter recently asked former Congressman and current Ambassador to the Netherlands Pete Hoekstra about some anti-Muslim comments he made during his long career of fanning the flames of bigotry and paranoia on the American right.

"You called it fake news", the journalist says.

The Dutch distribution at that point played the clasp of Hoekstra putting forth the expression. The incident is a weird quagmire of denials and accusations.

Hoekstra denied the statement, and called it "fake news".

"Y$3 ou mentioned in a debate that there are no-go zones in the Netherlands, and that cars and politicians are being set on fire", Zwart says.

Video of the event shows Hoekstra, speaking as an expert on migration into Europe, claim that a "stealth jihad" is targeting the West. "There are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned".

"The Islamic development has not gotten to the point where they have placed Europe in mayhem", he says in the clasp. Hoekstra is also said to oppose gay marriage and abortion, both of which are legal in the Netherlands.

"I didn't call that fake news, I didn't use the words today", Hoekstra responds. "That's actually an incorrect statement", Hoekstra replied. "We would call it 'fake news.' That's not what I said". "I don't think I did".

Hoekstra then doubled down on his position. In the clip, Hoekstra clearly argues Muslims have brought mayhem to the Netherlands, and that bureaucrats and vehicles are being set ablaze.

There's a popular right-wing narrative about the alleged spread of violent, Islamist-controlled "no-go zones" in cities in Western Europe where even police are afraid to go.

The U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands recently gave a weird interview to a Dutch journalist in which he denied making several comments, including one remark that he had made literally moments earlier.
