Apple Apologizes for Throttling Phones With Aging Batteries Promises More Transparency and Discounted Replacements Motorola and HTC Say They Don't Throttle Old Phones Like Apple

Thursday, the company put out a statement apologizing and calling the reports a misunderstanding.

As a gesture to back up the apology, the company is cutting the price of a replacement battery from $79 to $29 for "anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced".

Apple has faced lawsuits from consumers (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/another-lawsuit-filed-against-apple-for-slowing-down-old-iphones-2017-12-27) since admitting that it slowed down performance to adjust for batteries, which gave credence to conspiracy theories that the company slows down older smartphones to push customers toward buying newer models.

Apple said it initially attributed consumer complaints about slower performance to the kind of temporary sluggishness that can occur when an iPhone owner upgrades the phone's operating system, or to release bugs. The company started with a brief chemistry lesson, noting that as rechargeable lithium-ion batteries age their ability to charge diminishes.

For those who haven't heard about this, Apple confirmed earlier this month that it introduced a feature in older iPhones (starting with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, and most recently the iPhone 7) that aimed to prevent random shutdowns on those devices.

Customers are upset with the company over a software update that deliberately slowed down older phones in some situations to extend battery life. Specifically, it's a failsafe measure included in all versions of iOS released in the a year ago meant to keep components from catching fire and to prevent random shutdowns. And, according to Apple, it has successfully reduced unexpected shutdowns.

Apple made the move to address concerns about the quality and durability of its products at a time when it is charging $999 for its newest flagship model, the iPhone X.

Apple says users began reporting slower performance in the fall, when iOS 11 was released.

We now believe that another contributor to these user experiences is the continued chemical aging of the batteries in older iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s devices, many of which are still running on their original batteries. The program will be available worldwide through December 2018.

In addition to the discounted battery offer, Apple said it also plans to roll out an iOS update early next year that will better allow iPhone owners to monitor the health of their battery and to understand if its affecting their phone's performance.
