Canadian Blood Services has seen a notable increase in donations since December 18, when it issued an urgent call for eligible donors to fill 35,000 open appointments across Canada by January 6.

Donations drop by almost 40 percent during the holiday season while the need for blood increases.

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.

Many southern Albertans are enjoying some down time this season, but Canadian Blood Services wants to remind prospective donors that the demand for blood never takes a break.

Blood donors are urgently needed, says Canadian Blood Services (CBS).

"What happens this time of year, between Christmas and New Year's especially, is that people are out of their regular routines, off work, travelling and our attendance is much lower than we had hoped".

Clinics will be held at the Pictou Armouries from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, and at Summer Street Industries on Wednesday, Jan. 3, from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., as well as Thursday, Jan. 4, from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

United Blood Services strives to keep a five-day supply of every blood type at all times. Their "Pay it Forward" blood-drive is collecting donations all month for this cause. We get that during the holiday season people are travelling.

"I donate for several reasons", said Joe Michielson, a donor at the Lethbridge blood clinic.

Donors are needed from all blood types and communities, with a particular need for people from black and Asian communities to ensure the right mix of blood.

Canadian Blood Services said just four per cent of the Canadian population is supporting the need of patients across the country.
