The Trump administration reportedly fired the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS on Wednesday (27 December). A call for new council member nominations went out via a December 1 notice posted on the federal register.

The terminations were effective immediately, the paper reported, citing epidemiologist Patrick Sullivan.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has proposed massive budget cuts to programs created to help fight and eliminate HIV/AIDS.

Scott Schoettes, one of the "PACHA 6" who resigned in the summer, tweeted that the remaining members of the council had been fired for calling the Trump White House's approach to the HIV/AIDS epidemic "dangerous". Right now, many of us are people of color and members of the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV.

But while President Barack Obama had terminated all Bush appointees to the council, this situation is different, said Maldonado, who was appointed by Obama and was to serve into next year.

"Like any administration, they want their own people there", Maldonado told the Washington Blade. They also echo concerns voiced by sources close to the decision to fire the remaining PACHA advisers. "Two, many of us, our terms were over earlier this year and we were sworn back in, and three were stayed on almost four months after an executive order was signed continuing the council".

Reports came out that Trump, behind closed doors and complaining about immigration statistics, was allegedly upset that tens of thousands of Haitians came to the US each year, telling advisers the immigrants from that nation "all have AIDS".

Trump renewed PACHA with an executive order in September of 2017, but-Johnson notes-his "fiscal year 2018 budget proposal also sought massive cuts to HIV/AIDS programs, including $150 million on HIV/AIDS programs at the Centers of Disease Control and more than $1 billion in cuts from global programs like PEPFAR Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria". "Every organization serving people living with HIV and fighting to end this epidemic must galvanize their networks of clients, staff, and volunteers to resist and fight back against these unsafe HIV policy decisions", he added.

Maldonado noted the PACHA terminations are taking place at the year's end after the June resignations, which he said is "a little too coincidental". "There is no way for us to know where on the agenda HIV policy is, and that is the concerning part". Neither statement includes a explicit mention of LGBT people, who are considered to have face the brunt of the disease.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

It is not yet clear when the new appointments will be made.

Advocates have been critical of the administration's approach to HIV/AIDS issues.
