'We pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect, ' Trump tweeted.

President Trump on Tuesday angrily threatened to cut off USA aid to Palestinians as punishment for what he called their failure to show "appreciation or respect" to the United States.

Israeli lawmakers passed a bill early on Tuesday morning which limits the ability of its government to divide Jerusalem, which is a central Palestinian demand for a two-state agreement.

Mr Trump's latest comments appear to contradict his previous statement that the U.S. recognising Jerusalem as the Israeli capital would not impact the final status of the city in peace negotiations.

Other events in Washington in recent months have been created to put the squeeze on the Palestinians and make them return to the negotiating table.

Trump on Tuesday publicly questioned why the United States should provide the Palestinians with aid payments when they are "no longer willing to talk peace" with Israel.

"We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table. We're not giving the aid, we're going to make sure they come to the table and we want to move forward with the peace process".

Senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi said in a statement that "we will not be blackmailed".

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned any effort to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the Palestinian leadership said it would not meet with Vice President Mike Pence, who had planned a trip to the region.

When Trump declared Jerusalem to be Israel's capital, he insisted that the move would improve, not hurt, prospects for clinching a peace deal.

"President Trump has sabotaged our search for peace, freedom and justice".

Meanwhile, the poll also asked Israelis what "should be Jerusalem's status after there is stable peace between Israel and the Palestinians". "But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?" he stated on Twitter.

The US is the donor, providing nearly $370 million (£270m) in 2016.

On Sunday, the PA said it was recalling its envoy to the United States for consultations, in protest of USA actions.

The threat from Trump came in a tweet on Tuesday, which said the USA could cut its $300 million annual aid to Palestinians because it gets "no appreciation or respect" in return.
