Ten bodies were recovered from avalanche site at Khooni Nallah near Sadhan Top on the Kupwara-Tangdhar road in Kupwara district where a passenger vehicle was hit by a huge avalanche of snow, trapping seven persons. Among nine who went missing bodies of four persons have been recovered so far.

A few passengers managed to survive as the rescue operations progressed in full swing with rescue teams comprising of the police, Army, Mountain Rescue and State Disaster Response Force.

Nearly three hours after the avalanches, a 7-year-old was found alive and shifted to Kupwara hospital from he was referred to Srinagar hospitalized treatment. Officials said that a joint rescue operation was launched by the police, the Army, the SDRF and local people on Friday afternoon when the avalanche hit the area.

He said instructions have been given to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to release the relief immediately.




Locals protested against the authorities, demanding construction of a tunnel to avoid frequent accident on the Kupwara-Tangdhar road, particularly at Sadhna top.

Among dead include a couple as well as Mother-daughter duo.

After avalanches swept away two Sumo jeeps at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district, rescuers were sent to find the bodies buried in the avalanche. The survivor was identified as Ghulam Nabi Bhat, son of Ali Mohammed Bhat, a resident of Kalmona, Kralpora, Kupwara.

Minister for Tourism, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti also expressed grief and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
