The minister said, "I appeal to employees to come back for duty, honorable court has also asked them to come back".

At a press conference here on Friday, the trade union leaders said the State government, while doubling the salaries to elected representatives, government officials and judges, was not willing to accept their "demands" of pay hike, repayment of ₹7,000 crore owed to the workers, including retired employees.

The striking unions wanted the "factor" for revision to be fixed at 2.57 while the government insisted it be 2.44.

Taking a serious view of the strike called by certain transport unions, the Madras High Court said the workers should get back to work or "face consequences", including termination and contempt of court. "Recourse to lighting strikes or flash strikes without notice leads to the consequences of denying the citizens of their right to free movement and is clearly illegal and against the public interest", the judge said while passing interim orders on a PIL filed in this regard. Over 10 trade unions are on a strike pressing for wage revision and several other demands. In a joint statement, workers unions said the government had held 21 rounds of talks with them in the last 16 months but had not been able to come to a decision on the wage revision issue.

The Madras High Court on Friday directed the striking unions to withdraw the strike immediately or face action. "We are yet to receive a copy of the high court order".

When Express tried to find out what was the reason behind people not thronging bus stands, as is the norm, it came to light that after the strike began on Thursday evening most people made a decision to stay home on Friday.

Government sources said efforts were on to ply buses.

The government has invited those possessing valid driving licences to approach local bus depots to be used as substitute drivers. They called the strike on Thursday after they said talks with Vijayabhaskar on revising their salary and pending dues and arrears amounting to almost Rs 7,000 crore did not result in any breakthrough.

A large number of people were seen queued up waiting for the private buses at the different bus stops.

Chennai: The strike by transport workers which began last evening, continued for the second day leaving many commuters including office-goers and students stranded in the city and other parts of Tamilnadu.

Police were posted at bus depots to prevent any untoward incidents.
