Turkey, Russia warn USA against interference in Iran's domestic politics

Handle with care Russia: US Call for UN Meeting on Iran “Destructive”

(CNN) US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday touted a quarter billion dollar cut to the UN's annual budget, capping off a contentious year between the Trump administration and the global body.

Iranian Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo said the United States had abused its power as a permanent member of the Security Council by calling the emergency meeting.

It also pointed to a U.S. State Department official's Tuesday statement that the United States was communicating with anti-government protesters through its Facebook and Twitter pages in Farsi, and was encouraging them to demonstrate.

"The Iranian regime is now on notice: The world will be watching what you do", Haley warned. Haley said Friday that "the world should applaud their courage", and the US "stands unapologetically with those in Iran who seek freedom for themselves". "We support these legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people, and call on the government to allow the free exchange of ideas and information".

On Friday, Iranians held multiple rallies across the country to condemn the US administration's support for recent anti-government protests.

The Iranian government restricted access to social media at the height of the protests over the weekend, but many Iranians also use VPNs so the government can not track their online activity.

He added that changes in Iran will come from the people and not from overseas.

In the following days, however, the protests appeared to turn into anti-government rallies, spreading to Tehran, Kermanshah, Sanandaj, Zanjan, Ahvaz and Arak provinces. "Unfortunately, many of our European partners, as well as the United Nations, have thus far failed to forcefully speak out on the growing crisis in Iran".

"The President and I call on leaders of freedom-loving nations across the world to condemn Iran's unelected dictators and defend the Iranian people's unalienable right to chart their own future and determine their own destiny".

USA president Donald Trump and members of his administration have praised the anti-government demonstrators as people standing up to a repressive and corrupt regime that is trying to silence them.

In a Thursday tweet, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif hit back at the White House for what he cast as duplicitous comments.

"[The U.S.] continues to pursue a policy of open and implicit interference in the internal affairs of other states - doing it unabashedly, openly, under the slogan of caring for democracy and human rights, directly infringing on the sovereignty of other states", Ryabkov said, according to the Associated Press.

Trump's administration has denied having any hand in the demonstrations, saying they arose completely spontaneously.

The meeting began as a closed-door session but the USA was able to ensure a second, open phase of talks thereafter, despite resistance from Russia, France, Bolivia and other members.

Russian Federation said the United States is exploiting the protests in Iran in order to derail the landmark nuclear deal.

The United Kingdom's ambassadorto the United Nations has encouraged all member states to stay committed to the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), IRNA reports.
