Hawkeyes Rally Past Illinois

Iowa coach Fran Mc Caffery wants his Hawkeyes to play with more desire and pride in hopes of picking up their first Big Ten win of the season tonight at Illinois Illinois Falls to Iowa in Overtime

ANSWER: Iowa's rally from 20 points down at IL for a 104-97 overtime victory Thursday night was the third-largest deficit the Hawkeyes have overcome in program history.

Iowa was out of sorts in the first half, eventually falling behind by as many as 20 points, but the Hawkeyes started to right the ship leading into half, trimming the deficit to 54-41.

Iowa needed just 2:08 to reel off the first 10 points of the second half and force IL to call a timeout to pick up the pieces.

After Illinois freshman point guard Trent Frazier rattled home a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, Iowa scored the first 10 points of the extra session to gain control.

The Hawkeyes trailed by 49-29 with 3:53 remaining in the first half before rallying for a 104-97 overtime victory at IL on Thursday night at the State Farm Center.

Poor defense carried into the second half, and Iowa cut the lead to 3 points with a 10-0 run after just more than 2 minutes played. The Hawkeyes made a living at the free-throw line - 33 of their 40 attempts from the stripe - and that was a huge difference-maker when capitalizing on the Illini zone defense.

Iowa shot 50 percent from the field for the game, making 32-of-64 field goals. Of the Hawkeyes' 14 games that accepted bets, nine have finished over the projected point total.

The Hawkeyes tied the game at 66 with 12:06 remaining and again at 79 with 5:44 left, but they didn't retake the lead until Garza went off with a personal 8-0 spurt. 3-Point Goals-Iowa 7-24 (Bohannon 5-12, Baer 2-5, Garza 0-1, Dailey 0-1, Cook 0-1, Moss 0-4), IL 14-30 (Frazier 7-11, Jordan 4-8, Williams 1-2, Nichols 1-2, Alstork 1-2, Smith 0-2, Finke 0-3). He had 18 3-pointers in 17 games heading into Thursday's contest.

Tonight marked the third time in school history that Iowa rallied from at least 20 points to win a game (23 vs. Gardner-Webb in 2012 and 22 at IL in 1987).

Iowa's 104 points are its most in a Big Ten game since 1995 against Northwestern (W, 116-77).

Cook said he looked around at his teammates' eyes in the huddle prior to the overtime period and knew the game was in hand. Shortly thereafter, Black picked up his fifth foul, sent to the bench after scoring 18 points, 12 in the second half alone.

It was Iowa's second-largest road comeback in program history.

Iowa scored 104 points tonight, its highest total ever against IL dating back to 1908 (previous high was 97 in 1995). Ali Andrews had 13 points.

Leading the scoring for IL this year is Leron Black, with 14.3 PPG and 5.7 RPG, while Michael Finke has 10.6 PPG and 5.4 RPG.

It would have been easy for Iowa to mail it in in the second half. Garza scored eight straight points during a key stretch where Iowa took its first lead since the second minute of the game.

Isaiah Moss (12 points) and Nicholas Baer (10 points) rounded out the starting five's scoring, all starters scoring in double figures on the night.

After the Fighting Illini won both contests against the Hawkeyes last season, these teams will meet for the first time this year. "When Luka came in, he came in with energy and confidence".

EIU improves to 2-14 overall, 1-4 in the OVC while TSU falls to 3-11 overall, 1-4 in the OVC. Like Iowa, it struggled with turnovers. He had played well up until that point, and he was looking for the opportunity.

The Hawkeyes had 17 offensive rebounds, turning them into 18 second-chance points. Ten assists in Iowa's home loss to Ohio State on January 4 stands as his season high.
