Trump's domestic approval rating has remained consistently locked in around 37% - plus or minus depending on which way the wind is blowing - for the past nine months, according to weekly numbers from Gallup.

The US rating is down almost 20 points from the 48% approval rating in the previous year of President Barack Obama's administration, Gallup said.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that just 39% of Americans approve of Trump's performance, the lowest figure the poll has found for a modern president completing one year in office, according to NBC News.

Last year, the United States led in the global approval poll, beating out Germany 48 percent to 41 percent.

Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all finished their first calendar year with approval ratings in the mid-to-high 50s. In Canada alone, approval of USA leadership dropped more than 40 points. "Only 30% of the world, on average, approves of the job performance of the US's leadership, down from 48% in 2016". A third of Britons questioned in the new poll expressed approval, with 63% voicing disapproval. Only a median 24 percent approved of United States leadership, while a whopping 58 percent disapproved U.S. leadership.

"In fact, more people now disapprove of United States leadership than approve".

The US approval rating suffered most in its own neighborhood, the Americas, where the ratings dropped to a new low. Despite Trump's "America First" campaign, many countries are increasingly doubtful of the United States' ability to continue shaping and influencing worldwide policy. He has also threatened to back out of an agreement that prohibits Iranian nuclear weapon development and the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.

Only four countries increased their approval of the United States: Belarus, Israel, Liberia and Macedonia. Worldwide, a median 43 percent disapprove of US leadership - more than the median disapproval for Germany (25 percent), China (30 percent) or Russian Federation (36 percent).

The US has fallen below China in the Gallup global poll once before, in the past year of the George W Bush administration in 2008, but both the US and China were significantly more popular then than they are now.

But Trump's approval rating of 40%, while an improvement for him, is the lowest mark for any elected president at this point in their term in the White House in the last seven decades.

The Gallup report said that China, which has overtaken the U.S. as the leading trading partner in parts of Latin America, "may be positioned to take further advantage". The US disapproval rating in the region of 39 percent is higher than China's 31 percent.

13 percent chose "putting America first".

Trump is apparently trying to appeal to his supporters by highlighting the strength of the United States economy.

"However the world feels about US leadership, it hasn't affected how the world feels about the American dream", Clifton said. "In reality, this administration has devoted itself to renewing and rebuilding alliances which had been neglected for years, from Great Britain to Japan to various partners in eastern Europe", Gonzalez said. "President Xi's "Chinese Dream" is a transparent attempt to mimic the American model".
