But leaks of this kind potentially open up the scope for iPhone hacking and no doubt a degree of furore will be churning away in communities that love nothing more than getting stuck into a piece of private code.

"iBoot is the one component Apple has been holding on to, still encrypting its 64 bit image", Levin explained.

Apple indirectly confirmed the code to be real soon after when it demanded GitHub to take the source code down with a DMCA legal notice.

The code, known as iBoot, appeared on open source platform GitHub before being removed at Apple's request, and appeared to be from the company's iOS 9 software, which was released in 2015. Arxan Technologies VP of product, Rusty Carter says iBoot's leak could potentially allow hackers to find security holes in the smartphone, enabling them to analyse Apple's code, replicating and manipulating it for malicious goal.

It said it always encouraged customers to keep up to date with operating system upgrades. It corroborated information from two sources claiming that they had been given the iBoot code by a low-level Apple employee in 2016, who the publication was unable to speak with. It was public on the site for a short while until Apple submitted a DMCA takedown request, which was accepted by GitHub.

Apple has led a bug bounty program in the past, offering researchers up to $200k to expose vulnerabilities in the boot process - meaning this leak could be another opportunity to strengthen security, depending on who gets their hands on it. According to Motherboard, the code that was posted said it's for iOS 9, though it's likely aspects of it are still used in the current version, iOS 11. In any case, Apple will have enough time to secure things up and might issue a patch to cover any risks posed by the leak.

Sky News has contacted Apple for a comment.

The iBoot source code could also enable programmers to eventually find a way to emulate iOS on devices other than iPhones and iPads, which would be a big thorn in Apple's closed ecosystem approach.

Only time will tell whether or not something will come from the leak many tech professionals are calling "the biggest leak in history".
