An American Man Actually Won A Luge Medal At The Olympics

Chris Mazdzer Slides Into History As First US Man To Medal In Singles Luge An American Man Actually Won A Luge Medal At The Olympics

He was headed for a third straight gold medal entering his fourth and final run in the men's singles luge after scores that ranked him second, first, and second (respectively) on his first three runs. And when it comes to men's singles luge, Mazdzer will always be the first.

Austria's David Gleirscher took gold and Germany's Johannes Ludwig bronze.

American Chris Mazdzer earned a silver medal in men's singles luge today (Feb. 11) at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, finishing just.026 seconds behind the victor, David Gleirscher of Austria.

Loch had won gold in the last two Olympics in men's singles.

After the event Sunday, Mazdzer said his silver capped years of struggle. Mazdzer's medal was the Team USA's sixth all time in the luge, which was introduced to the Winter Games in 1964.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., Mazdzer grew up in Saranac Lake, N.Y., a 15-minute drive from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.

As an 18-year-old, West had finished 22nd in the luge men's singles at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

A clean run for Loch nearly guaranteed a medal, and yet, amazingly, he made a slight but hugely significant error that saw him slump to fifth in the overall standings. It's the first time the USA has medaled in the event since it became an Olympic sport in 1964. Mazdzer also broke the course record to move into second place. All he needed to do in his fourth and final run today was not falter-and he didn't. In the final run his time of 47.677, his second-best of the competition, was enough to land the silver. Now that an American has earned a medal in men's singles luge too, team spokesman Sandy Caligiore said Sunday they've got their sights set even higher.
