The Newmarket, Ont., native had 137.144 points which was more than enough for Canada to take the top spot in the event beating out the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation and the US with 73 points for their first gold medal at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeonchang. The Russians could pick up a maximum of four points in that discipline.

"I worked my butt off incredibly hard these past four years to get on this team", Daleman said.

The win makes ice dancing duo Virtue and Scott tied with Evgeni Plushenko (RUS) and Gillis Grafström (SWE) as the most decorated Olympic figure skaters of all time.

"I'm going to hold this medal tight to me and it's going to be as good as the individual event", he said, before he even knew he'd officially won gold.

"We weren't happy with our approach in Sochi, it was too casual", he said. The United States repeated its showing in the 2014 Sochi Games with a bronze medal.

Chan put it perfectly (and humbly as ever), acknowledging that it was truly a team effort: "I'm an Olympic gold medalist now, thanks to a team".

The women's free skate was top scale - and historic - for the Americans.

Kim is already the US star of the Games thanks to her personality and dominant performance so far (she blew away the competition in qualifiers), and she gets the primetime spotlight more or less to herself on Monday night.

Mirai Nagasu became the first USA lady to land a triple Axel at the Olympic Games.

"Going into it, I was like a train and I was like, 'Get on the tracks and get some speed, '" she said.

It wasn't really the whole routine, though.

That tough journey proved to be worth it for Daleman when she stood on the podium with the rest of her Canadian teammates. The 15-year-old stamped herself as the main challenger to countrywoman Evgenia Medvedeva for the gold in the individual event with a brilliant combination of jumps, spins, artistry and overall presence.

"I didn't want to let my team down". Chan won it despite several major mistakes - his struggles on the triple axel struck him once again. "So we wanted to change it, make it a little bit better", Moir told reporters.

"Canadians are born on the ice, we think we are best in world. we are proud we took it more seriously, especially against two very good teams". "I still have another week of competition to go, but to have that moment, my family is here, I have friends watching at home".

The Canadians won the men's moguls title for the third consecutive Olympics, with six-time world champion Mikael Kingsbury filling the only hole in his resume.

To the disappointment of many fans, especially longtime Canadian followers who have watched them for years, Virtue and Moir maintain that their relationship is strictly platonic - and has always been, except for that childhood blip.

As did the team bronze medal, of course.
