Canadian women's hockey player apologizes for removing medal

Melodie Daoust scores superb penalty but Canada lose to USA in women's ice hockey final Melodie Daoust scored a sublime penalty in the shootout

Immediately after the silver medal was placed around her neck, Larocque removed it.

This isn't the first time Larocque has participated in a gold medal game at the Winter Olympics.

Canadian women's hockey player Jocelyn Larocque apologized after taking off her silver medal during Thursday's ceremonies at the Pyeongchang Olympics, saying she meant no disrespect and was caught up in the emotion of a bitter loss.

"When it comes down to a shootout, it could be anybody's game".

Shuster, George and teammates John Landsteiner and Matt Hamilton had a 2-4 record in pool play less than a week ago before reeling off three straight victories, including one against Canada — victor of the past three golds — to secure a berth in the medal round.

Another Jocelyne was on the other end of the sporting spectrum Thursday. The following 20 minute 4 on 4 overtime period couldn't settle it.

The last time the United States won the gold was 1998 at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

That's how the American men were eliminated by the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

USA coach Robb Stauber was among those who empathized with her, having failed to get gold in the 2014 Winter Olympics, which the Canadians won.

In curling-speak, Koe put it like this: "For sure, if my first one doesn't rub and we get by, we're probably getting two".

"I want to apologize to the IOC, IIHF, the Pyeongchang Olympic Organizing Committee, Canadian Olympic Committee, Hockey Canada and most especially to my teammates and our fans for removing my silver medal after it was presented to me".

Canada had won gold in three of the past four Olympics, but the first year without National Hockey League players on the Canadian roster meant Team Canada's chances to win it all this year were less optimistic.

After 20-year-old USA goalie Maddie Rooney stopped another shot, Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson pulled off a ridiculous shot, dubbed the "oops, I did it again" move, and slid the puck past the Canadian goalie to put the US ahead.

"She was unbelievable back then, you could always see it in her, that something was gonna happen", said Kennedy. She shot the puck into Rooney's pad, and it skittered toward the crease, inching toward the goal line.

The goalie who took the year off from college at Minnesota-Duluth had outdueled three-time Olympian Shannon Szabados, who was among those who prefer overtime over a shootout to settle such an important game.

"That is how it works", Canada forward Blayre Turnbull said. It was finally decided in a shootout.

After leaving the ice heartbroken, and struggling to answer post-game questions for reporters, Larocque had nearly made it to the dressing room when an official from hockey's governing body pulled her aside and gave her a talking to. Former Cushing Academy hockey coach Paul Kennedy said he is very proud of her.

"It's incredibly hard, especially when you spend a lifetime really preparing for this moment", she said.

He sees every Olympic hockey tournament as an opportunity to win gold no matter who shows up. She has one more year of eligibility left at Boston College after taking this season off to train with the USA team. She has since released a statement saying she wishes she could take it back.
