Trump says son-in-law's clearance is up to Kelly

Senior adviser Jared Kushner attends a roundtable in the Roosevelt Room of the White House Letter: Trump should face his accusers

U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has been working for the White House without permanent security clearances for most of the past year. So that will be up to General Kelly'. But Kelly said in a statement that his administrative changes will not affect Kushner's ability to lead Trump's Mideast peace effort. Two people said the deputy attorney general told McGahn the Justice Department had obtained important new information, suggesting it could be an obstacle to his clearance process.

Rob Porter, one such person on an interim clearance, was forced out of his job as White House staff secretary once allegations of domestic abuse against his ex-wives surfaced in public. Those with temporary "top secret" or higher clearances are expected to be bumped down to temporary "secret" clearances, which provide more limited access. "General Kelly respects Jared a lot".

"Everyone in the White House is grateful for these valuable contributions to furthering the President's agenda", Kelly said.

The debate over security clearance has also heightened existing tensions between Kushner and Kelly.

It's also not clear whether other White House officials whose actions have been scrutinized by Mueller have been unable to get a decision on their security clearance applications.

"I haven't spoken with the president about whether or not that would be necessary", Sanders said.

Kushner is among a dozen White House officials who operate under provisional security permits, according to officials who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity.

He has been working with an interim security clearance in the meantime, which affords him access to some of the same classified information President Donald Trump sees.

The overhaul includes a crackdown on interim security clearances, something that could affect Kushner, who has been working without a permanent security clearance. "And Gen. Kelly will make that call", Trump said.

He complained that it had taken "months and months and months" for some of his staff members to be given their security clearances, despite the fact that some of them do not have complicated financial backgrounds - a factor that sometimes delays background investigations. It also provided another layer of intrigue to the acrimonious relationship between Kushner and Kelly, who have been at odds over access to the President and the classified materials he views.

The information was discovered in the course of Kushner's background check, The Washington Post reported on Friday.

"We inherited a system that's broken".

In addition, Kushner's actions during the transition have been noted in the guilty plea of former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, who admitted he lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
