USA must continue to be a leader: Turnbull

Australian PM heading to US for talks with Trump, governors USA must continue to be a leader: Turnbull

Earlier, before meeting the U.S. president, Donald Trump, at the White House, Turnbull said he was looking forward to working with the new leader of the National party after the resignation of Barnaby Joyce.

Turnbull told the news conference that he and Trump had agreed on new initiatives to deepen security and economic ties.

As an incentive, Turnbull will also propose spending an unspecified amount of Australia's pension pool to fund Trump's $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan, the official said.

They gave Mr Trump and first lady Melania RM Williams boots as gifts during Friday's four-hour visit at the White House.

Members of Congress reportedly will travel to Australia later this year to discuss such funding sources for their forthcoming infrastructure legislation.

Earlier at a joint White House news conference, Trump thanked the prime minister for serving as a strong voice for peace and stability across the entire Indo-Pacific region.

"It's 100 years of mateship we are celebrating, 100 years since the first time American and Australian soldiers went into battle together", he said.

"There is no closer friendship", Trump opened.

Australia's system has been held up by many as an example of how gun controls in the United States should be tightened.

USA must continue to be a leader: Turnbull

Australia's appeal to Trump will be to tout the virtue of free trade for rank-and-file workers and citizens across the USA, an approach that - so far - has been successful when Cabinet officials and members of Congress have urged the president not to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Trump said that US ties with Beijing have improved, but warned that the relationship could be derailed over trade disputes.

"The Trans-Pacific Partnership was not a good deal for us", Trump said, stressing that he would rejoin a deal that was better for the United States, but prefers bilateral deals over pacts involving many countries.

Trey Yingst, the chief White House correspondent for One America News Network, asked President Trump what - specifically - he will do to solve America's mass shooting pandemic.

Mr Trump later tweeted his support for the Secret Service's work.

Along with Turnbull came a large group of company heads. "It would have cost us tremendous amounts of jobs, would have been bad", Trump said, calling for renegotiation of the pact with Australia, Japan and the nine other remaining TPP signatories.

"We intend to continue to protect the integrity of our institutions and to counter threats we face, whether they stem from terrorism, cyber activity, or transnational crime".

"The relationship that we have with Australia is a terrific relationship and probably stronger now than ever before, maybe because of our relationship, our friendship", Trump said.

Both leaders dismiss speculation that their relationship had been damaged by that telephone call.
