Winter Olympics 2018: Russian bobsledder disqualified for doping

Russian Bobsledder Fails Doping Test After Wearing 'I Don't Do Doping' Shirt Winter Olympics 2018: Russian bobsledder disqualified for doping

According to the Russian bobsleigh federation's Facebook post, Nadezhda Sergeeva tested positive for a banned heart medication February 18.

A Russian Olympic athlete who declared her anti-doping stance on a jumper emblazoned with the slogan, "I Don't Do Doping, I Am Za Sport', has tested positive for a banned substance".

The news about Sergeeva comes one day after a bronze medal was stripped from Russian curling athlete Aleksandr Krushelnitckii, who had tested positive for meldonium in Pyeongchang. Russian Federation was banned from participating in PyeongChang, but 168 of the country's athletes cleared of doping allegations were allowed to compete as OAR delegates.

This isn't the first time that Sergeeva has fallen foul of anti-doping laws as she also tested positive for the banned substance meldonium in 2016. The International Olympic Committee did not release a statement on the athletes or the possibility of the athletes carrying a Russian flag as of Friday afternoon. But despite extensive vetting Sergeyeva and another Russian athlete failed tests during the Games.

Russian athletes competed in Pyeongchang under a neutral flag and colours because of alleged state-sponsored doping at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, four years ago.

They have been unable to wear national uniforms or have the Russian anthem played at medal ceremonies.

Sergeeva and her brakewoman Anastasia Kocherzhova finished 12th in the women's two-person bobsleigh which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, but their results have now been expunged from the record.

But Krushelnitsky decided not to contest the case and the court said that he had admitted doping.

WADA added the drug to its banned list in 2014 for in-competition testing. The AP reported that the drug in question was trimetazidine, which Sergeeva denies taking. She had provided a clean sample a few days earlier on February 13.

According to the Russian Bobsled President Alexander Zubkov, "she confirms see took no such medication and the team confirms she was not issued any medication".

The Institute of National Anti-Doping Organizations has ripped the International Olympic Committee for allowing Russians to compete.
