Perhaps the most iconic of all dining guides, Zagat will be sold by Google after seven years under the tech behemoth.

At the time, the details were light and it wasn't known which company Google was speaking with, though the initial report said that several entities were interested in the longstanding service. In an interview with NYTimes, Nina Zagat (one half of the Zagat co-founder team) spoke highly of The Infatuation. Since then, Zagat scores and reviews have been integrated into Google services and Google employees have been running Zagat's official website. The New York Times is reporting this morning that the technology giant is selling off the company to The Infatuation, a review site founded nine years back by former music execs. As Google has its own, separate review system now, moving the Zagat brand to a different company is probably positive for everyone.

Since Google bought Zagat a little more than six years ago for a reported $151 million (RM590 million), the long-established service for evaluating dining experiences has seen appetites turn to Internet age services such as Yelp.

The Infatuation and Zagat will operate as two distinct brands, with individual platforms, and distinct purposes and points of view.

Google incorporated Zagat into its Maps service, and released an app in 2016 that gives suggestions based on the time of day and a user's location.

"How often does an iconic brand like Zagat become available?" The company covers major cities in both the US and overseas, including New York, Los Angeles, London, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, and Seattle. "Tim and I are very excited for Zagat's next chapter with The Infatuation", said Nina Zagat. "It is the ideal complement to what we have been building at The Infatuation".

We're thrilled by this opportunity to acquire such a pioneering and trusted restaurant guide as Zagat.
