'California, We Have a Problem,' Jeff Sessions Declares

Brown fires back at Sessions' federal lawsuit 'California, We Have a Problem,' Jeff Sessions Declares

Attorney General Jeff Sessions slammed California's Democrat leadership for rejecting the rule of law, and for protecting criminal illegal immigrants.

"How dare you?" Sessions said of Schaaf at a California Peace Officers Association meeting in Sacramento.

Sessions was speaking to an audience full of law enforcement, and he insisted that the Justice Department would win their lawsuit against California, which is only one of the major beefs - along with its legalization of marijuana smoking - that he holds with the state.

Calling it a "reign of terror", Governor Jerry Brown minced no words in his response to what he considers a declaration of war from U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who announced Wednesday the filing of a federal lawsuit against the state of California for its sanctuary policies. "Contrary to what you might hear from open borders radicals", Sessions told the audience, "we are not asking California or Oakland or anywhere else to actively, effectively enforce immigration laws".

Hans von Spakovsky, a legal scholar at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said the Department of Justice is on solid legal ground to challenge state and local laws that impede federal law enforcement.

Sessions criticized Mayor Libby Schaaf in a speech Wednesday to law enforcement officials after he sued California over laws that restrict cooperation with USA immigration authorities.

Continuing a sweep that began early this year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 232 undocumented immigrants over four days, ending March 1.

"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America", Brown said on Twitter.

"California is using every power it has - and some it doesn't - to frustrate federal law enforcement".

But he also blasted Sessions for making "wild accusations" and willfully misrepresenting California's laws and its intentions.

"It wasn't something I chose to do, but I can't sit by idly while the lawful authority of federal officers are being blocked by legislative acts and politicians", Sessions said, straying from his prepared remarks.

California is home to the largest number of undocumented immigrants, almost one-quarter of the estimated 11 million in total across the United States. This administration believe in States' rights when it is convenient for their cause.

The Trump administration is arguing that the sanctuary laws violate the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause, which generally holds that federal law prevails in conflicts between state and federal laws. "Her actions support those who flout our laws and boldly validate the illegality". This saga of state vs. country has been ongoing, of course, but this legal move - whether a distracting stunt or legitimate case - takes that battle to the next level.

Brown and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra are directly named in the suit - and are ready for the fight. Can you even fathom the audacity, asks the Justice Department, of California enacting a law to safeguard individual constitutional rights?

"Here in California, we respect the law and the Constitution".

"Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue by other means, with more difficulty in risky situations - all because of one irresponsible action", Sessions said.
