Data from emergency departments (EDs) show that the US opioid overdose epidemic continues to worsen, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the Midwest, overdoses jumped 70%, due in part to increases of 109% in Wisconsin and 65.5% in IL, report NPR and CNN.

Miller attributed the decline in opioid deaths "to increased awareness about the opioid crisis, as well as an increase in the use of naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses".

The report found that from July 2016 to September 2017, a total of 142,557 emergency room visits were due to suspected opioid overdoses.

America's opioid epidemic is getting worse, not better, according to an alarming new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Nirav D. Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the rise in overdoses in the state is not unexpected given the upsurge in fentanyl-laced heroin across the state.

After the Midwest, where opioid overdose visits rose an average of 70 percent, the largest regional increase was in the West, where the rise was 40 percent.

Director of the CDC Anne Schuchat reveals that she and her team "saw, sadly, that in every region, in every age group of adults, in both men and women, overdoses from opioids are increasing".

While there was no state-by-state breakdown of visits by the CDC, the Maine Hospital Association estimated that there were about 1,500 to 2,000 visits to Maine emergency departments for opioid overdoses in the year measured.

Schuchat and Adams called for expanding the use of naloxone to first responders, community members and overdose victims and their families to prevent opioid overdoses. He said the expansion of Narcan use - an opioid overdose antidote - in the greater Portland area has probably led to decreased numbers of overdoses ending up in emergency rooms.

Research shows people who have overdosed once are likely to do so again, making the ER a gateway for connecting people with treatment, Schuchat said.

Jennifer Miller, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services, said many suspected opioid overdoses in ERs don't become confirmed cases.

The report also suggests emergency departments coordinate with local health departments, state officials, treatment providers and police to identify an action plan to get people into treatment. "We are building the capacity for prevention and treatment to try to keep people out of the EDs", Harris said.

"We think that the idea of initiating medically-assisted treatment in the emergency department is an innovative and exciting strategy", Schuchat said. "The number of Americans experiencing opioid overdoses is still increasing". The CDC now recommends against using opioids for chronic pain.
