Tillerson says China 'encourages dependency' in Africa

US Secretary Of State To Visit Nigeria Next Week Nigeria's general elections our priority –US gov't

However, experts highlighted that the visit had no other motivation than to study ways for the United States to be bale to economically benefit even more from Africa, because the grounds of the USA foreign policy give priority to capital over any other aspect.

Former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield told VOA on Tuesday that Tillerson is "absolutely correct" on Chinese influence in Africa, but "he did not say what will done to counter balance that influence". About $184 million was destined South Sudan and $110 million for Somalia amid conflicts in both countries.

"Although Africa needs sustained investment and engagement from members of the global community, China has been largely a negative actor in the region for some time", Smith said. "Our country's security and economic prosperity are linked with Africa's like never before", he said, adding the Africa-U.S. engagement will only intensify in the coming decades for several reasons.

He said China has focused on extending financial support in the fields of infrastructure building and productivity improvement.

Geng said China will continue to promote large-scale infrastructure and industrial development in Africa.

During his trip, he will be looking to build bridges after President Donald Trump reportedly used foul language to describe African countries in January.

Tillerson announced the $533 million aid for the African countries while speaking at George Mason University in Virginia shortly before departing the U.S. for Africa.

The relationship between the United States and Africa under President Trumps administration did not necessarily begin on the best note with the president's tough stance on immigration which is affecting many Africans in the diaspora and on the continent; condescending comments made by the president, which he publicly denied afterwards; and the recent disagreement with some East African leaders on the importation of second-hand clothes.

Secretary Tillerson would meet with officials in Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Chad and Djibouti to strengthen U.S. -Africa ties, they said.

Kenya has also served as "an incubator for how we expanded Pepfar over the years", Mr Tillerson said.

"Greater stability will attract United States' trade and investment with African nations", he said.
