While the Proteas camp are adamant Warner got personal when sledging de Kock in the lead-up to the confrontation, Australia wicketkeeper Tim Paine called the hosts' claims "completely false".

David Warner has avoided suspension but copped a fine of approximately $13,500 after being charged over his staircase stoush with Quinton de Kock.

A Level II charge brings with it three-four demerit points and up to 100 per cent fine of a player's match fee.

Warner is not the only Australian player to be punished by the ICC following what was a tempestuous 118-run victory in Durban.

Whilst all of them walked off ignoring the batsmen, Warner couldn't resist a dig at De Kock, calling him a "sook".

Paine added that had Warner been able to get any closer to De Kock, there was no telling what he would have done.

Australia vice-captain David Warner could be banned from playing in the second Test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth after he was charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his off-field altercation with South Africa's Quinton de Kock. A tweet linking to the CCTV footage of the exchange, meanwhile, led de Kock's sister to tweet: "Wtf!"

Rabada rips through Australian batting

"I don't know how their team manager can hear from where he's sitting".

"Respect is the key & and I hope nothing personal was said to any player towards anyone from either side".

"We spoke about cricket stuff and a few little things with his fitness".

This was not the first time that Warner has been involved in getting fired up against the South Africans.

Team management have confirmed De Kock will contest his charge.

"We were trying to make it an uncomfortable place for Quinton to bat, no doubt, but we didn't cross the line".

Former South African skipper Graeme Smith agreed it was not good for cricket, but suggested Warner only had himself to blame in an online reply to Gilchrist.
