Paul Manafort Chastised by Federal Judge for Breaking Gag Order

Paul Manafort gets a trial date Ex-Trump Campaign Chief Pleads Not Guilty To New Charges In Russia Probe

U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort has again pleaded not guilty to criminal charges in the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and will face another trial in July.

Manafort pleaded not guilty in a Virginia courtroom to charges ranging from bank fraud to filing false tax returns that were brought by Robert Mueller, the USA special counsel for the Russian Federation probe.

He appeared in the federal court in Washington on February 28 to plead not guilty to 17 grand jury charges of conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, lying to federal agents and failing to register as a foreign agent.

The grand jury indictment in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, accuses Manafort of hiding from the Internal Revenue Service tens of millions of dollars he earned advising pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine.

Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, had asked for a trial date in November, citing the complexity of the case. That trial begins in September.

The mystery man sported a full white beard, black beanie hat and sunglasses as he extended his hands upward while Manafort arrived at the Albert V. Bryan Courthouse in Virginia.

Prosecutors had offered to combine the indictments in the District, but Manafort refused to do so. They say he used funds from secret offshore accounts to enjoy a life of luxury.

Also waiting was Bill Christeson of Kensington, Md., who said he has followed Manafort to several court appearances and has been hoping to see the longtime lobbyist prosecuted for decades. His former deputy, Rick Gates, is cooperating with prosecutors after pleading guilty to conspiracy.

In return, Mueller agreed to drop 22 tax and bank fraud charges against him.

After Gates plead guilty last month, Manafort released a statement through spokesman Jason Maloni reaffirming his his confidence that he will be acquitted of all charges.

Meanwhile, at the federal court in Washington, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she will hold a motion hearing on April 4 to consider whether a lawsuit Manafort against the Department of Justice should be be dismissed.
