In this case, Waymo is launching a pilot program that will see autonomous semi-trucks navigating through the Atlanta, Georgia area. Interestingly, the company said it now has nearly 10 years of experience in self-driving passenger vehicles, which it will leverage for its autonomous trucks.

The company explained that its software is "learning to drive big rigs in much the same way a human driver would after years of driving passenger cars".

Google's Waymo has been testing autonomous vehicles for quite some time, so it's taking the next logical step by shifting the technology over to trucks.

Earlier this week, Uber revealed that it is testing a hybrid freight delivery system that mixes self-driving and driver-operated trucks created to reduce fatigue for truckers and long absences from home.

Waymo was a few days late to announce the rollout. The trucks will be hauling goods and equipment destined for Google's data centers in the area. With more than 12,000 logistics providers employing over 150,000 in the state, along with the world's busiest airport, Atlanta is one of the top supply chain centers in the country.

Now that Waymo is free of its long-running legal battle with Uber, it is focusing its attention on more important endeavors; namely spreading its self-driving technology to more platforms.

Waymo said: 'The principles are the same, but things like braking, turning and blind spots are different with a fully-loaded truck and trailer.

This news comes after Uber revealed its own autonomous trucking progress earlier this week, and after startup Embark reported a cross-country trip of its own test platform earlier this year. The software is also the same and it benefits from having driven five million miles on public roads and over five billion miles in simulations.

Initially, Waymo will have a safety driver behind the wheel just like these other companies. "The transport of freight and cargo is a critical driver for the American economy".

Autonomous-vehicle technology has been touted as having potential to save fuel, ease congestion, and make transportation safer.
