In statements to TechCrunch, Snapchat says that it removed the GIF and temporarily halted its integration with Giphy "while we wait for Giphy's team to take a look at it", while Instagram say that it's done the same.

A spokesperson for Giphy has responded to claims that a racist GIF was found within Snapchat and Instagram's search function. "We have stopped our integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue", Instagram said.

"This type of content has no place on Instagram".

It's not yet known when, or if, this update will be rolled out although the buzz around it does come at a good time for Snapchat which has been receiving negative publicity since recent in-app changes that provoked an online petition to revert back to the older version.

The GIF included disturbing text including a racial slur. It reads "N-- Crime Death Counter - Keep Cranking Bonzo, the Numbers Just Keep on Climbing!" The developments come after a 21-year-old Snapchat user from the United Kingdom notified the company of it.

Giphy has not yet responded to our request for comment.

Instagram similarly disabled Giphy after hearing about the hateful GIF.

This isn't Snapchat's first run-in with racist content. The image messaging app faced heavy criticism in 2016 for creating an Asian "yellowface" stereotype augmented reality lens which gave people slanted eyes. Snapchat risks an unsavory reputation if it can't keep its content under control.

It means you can promote your friends or favourite influencers much more easily on Snapchat.
