MI is the only state with a decline in third-grade math. When asked if MI schools have gotten better as a result of her plans, DeVos answers that she doesn't know.
So on 60 Minutes, CBS' Lesley Stahl obviously asked DeVos about the MI public school system, which is one of the worst in the country.
DeVos' comments come not long after the White House unveiled a set of proposals to address gun and school safety. We need to ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment.
Lesley Stahl: Okay. But what about the kids who are back at the school that's not working?
DeVos:Well, there are certainly lots of pockets where the students are doing well.
DeVosstruggled to explain how her plan would benefit students, particularly those in disadvantaged schools. Collins and Tapper both noted how DeVos has struggled with answering these types of questions before, and Collins pointed out that DeVos was struggling to answer questions about the most fundamental aspects of her department. "We owe that to our children", she wrote. She has been a firm advocate of school choice as part of her education platform. She would not commit to continuing to require that the data be submitted.

She appeared to be unfamiliar with the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, a federal civil rights law.
DeVos is also debating ending Obama-era guidance that tried to "avoid and remedy discriminatory discipline" in classrooms. "But again, I think this is an issue that is best decided at the local level by communities and by states".
"Maybe you should", Stahl suggested.
"But are they the same?"
The wife of Amway executive Dick DeVos and wealthy in her own right, Betsy DeVos is a former two-time state Republican Party chairwoman in MI.
