United Kingdom will come to 'regret' Brexit decision, Juncker says

Mike Cherry, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said discussions over future trade deals were "clearly important" but the priority for firms now was getting clarity about the immediate future with the European Union after Brexit day.

If the European Union (EU) and Britain are to reach an understanding on their future relationship, London should provide more clarity on its view about it, Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, told the European Parliament here Tuesday.

"It is not crystal clear how a potential exclusion process will function", European Commision Vice President Jyrki Katainen told a news conference, saying he had discussed the issue with France and Japan.

Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, said he was "surprised" that the prime minister had expected it to accept her demands in the Mansion House speech.

Barnier meanwhile said a whole range of options for third-country cooperation were on the table - the European Union has previously cited trade deals of the type it has with Canada and South Korea.

"I'm clear there is a difference between those people who came prior to us leaving and those who will come when they know the United Kingdom is no longer a member". Do you accept that, or do you then put in a guard to stop them doing that.

Firms across the EU's 27 countries other than Britain will have to pay 31 billion pounds a year in tariff and non-tariff barriers if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal, the report by Oliver Wyman management consultants and law firm Clifford Chance said.

Mr Weber, chairman of the European People's Party group, bemoaned the Brexit red lines set by Theresa May in her recent Mansion House speech.

"You can not have the rights of Norway and then the obligations of Canada".

Mr Verhofstadt said it was time to move beyond "slogans" and "soundbites".

His European Parliament motion calls for an "association agreement" to deal with the future UK-EU relationship.

He said: 'Mrs May, we did not vote for a transition period, we voted to leave this organisation, we voted to leave the customs union, we voted to leave the single market.

In the EU's draft withdrawal agreement, published in February, the three options for avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic were: a comprehensive trade deal; a bespoke, most likely technological solution; or "full regulatory alignment" between the two territories.

'Please Mrs May, at this summit next week, do what Trump has done - stand strong against the European Commission, against the unelected bullies'.
