Citing the Iran nuclear deal and other issues, Trump said he and Tillerson were "not really thinking the same".

Tillerson defended his record Tuesday, telling reporters that "working with allies, we exceeded the expectations of nearly everyone" with the "maximum pressure" campaign to denuclearize North Korea.

Tillerson also appeared out of the loop last week when Trump announced he would meet with North Korea's leader and become the first sitting USA president to do so.

Tillerson said he would return to private life as a private citizen.

Pompeo "holds a stance of pushing ahead with the U.S". That same corporate experience gave Tillerson a background in the sensitivities and demands of a large and diverse workforce, and appeared to inform his clear disagreement with Trump over last year's white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville.

However, a statement from Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein, tweeted by ABC News' Conor Finnegan, contradicted Washington Post's version of the story.

Goldstein was sacked by the White House shortly after issuing the statement. On Monday, Tillerson told reporters traveling with him that he was "very, very concerned" with Russia's growing aggression.

"This is not someone who has sharp elbows, but she is a sharp competitor", said a former senior intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss Haspel. Longtime readers are probably aware that I was not Tillerson's biggest fan, so let's start with the nice things I can say.

In short, President Trump said he was going to drain the swamp and Rex Tillerson looked, to me, to be of the swamp.

"What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition during a time that the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges", Tillerson said.

All of the officials demanded anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

"I think it's awful, I guess he thinks it was OK", Trump said.

Earlier today, it came out that President Donald Trump had forced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to resign from his position.

Pompeo has advocated for military strikes against Iran while lobbying hard against the nuclear deal with Tehran.

Trump's frayed relationship with Tillerson has been well-documented.

"It's important that the USA maintains its seat at the table about how to address the threat of climate change, which does require a global response", the former CEO of oil giant ExxonMobil had said during his confirmation hearings.

In a surprise move, President Trump expressed a desire last week to meet personally with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with a meeting potentially happening within the next several months.

Tillerson has no singular foreign policy cause or achievement to his credit, but he had worked to open the door to talks with North Korea. At least Mr Kerry had tried to make situational deals with the Kremlin, sometimes angering more hawkish officials in the Obama administration.

"We congratulate Mike Pompeo on his designation as the new Secretary of State". For technical purposes, Tillerson said he would remain the secretary of state till 31 March and till then he would delegate his responsibilities to the deputy secretary of state John Sullivan. Trump has also nominated Gina Haspel, the current deputy director at the Central Intelligence Agency, to replace Pompeo at the CIA.

Mr Pompeo, a strong ally of Mr Trump who regularly delivers the daily intelligence briefings to the president, is a former Tea Party Republican. Both positions require confirmation by the Senate.

Senate Democrat Ron Wyden of OR, a senior member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, announced opposition to Haspel's nomination, as her past renders her "unsuitable" to run the agency.

In just four election cycles, 2010 through 2016, Pompeo received: $335,000 from Koch Industries employees (including $92,000 just from the Koch family); $69,000 from the Koch Industries PAC; $417,175 from Americans for Prosperity (which is the right-wing advocacy group founded by the Koch brothers); plus another $87,532 from "Other outside groups heavily funded by the Kochs".
