Monalisa Perez, a 20-year-old Minnesota woman, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 180 days in jail for fatally shooting her boyfriend, 22-year-old Pedro Ruiz, for a YouTube vlog.
Monalisa Perez, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter for the fatal shooting of boyfriend Pedro Ruiz at their Minnesota home in June a year ago.
Instead of the bullet lodging in the book as planned, it accidentally passed through, killing 22-year-old Ruiz in front of the couple's three-year-old child and nearly 30 onlookers at the pair's Halstad home. She was pregnant with their second child when the incident happened.
Two cameras captured the tragic shooting outside the couple's home in Halstad past year.
Norman County Attorney James Brue said Monday, "I expect her to be sentenced with what is outlined" in the plea agreement.
A deadly shooting that started as a YouTube prank resulted in an official criminal sentencing Wednesday.
On the day of the shooting, Perez tweeted that she and Ruiz were "probably going to shoot one of the most unsafe videos ever".
Before the tragedy occurred, the camera can be seen panning towards Perez who explained to the couple's YouTube subscribers what she and Pedro were about to do. Judge Jeffrey Remick accepted the plea deal, allowing her to serve her sentence in 10-day increments over the next three years in South Dakota, where she now lives.
Also as part of the sentence the judge said MonaLisa could never profit off the shooting death of her boyfriend.
Hours before the shooting, Perez spelled out her concern on Twitter.
Brue told the court Wednesday that the sentence balances the need to hold Perez accountable and the fact that the stunt was Ruiz's idea and he assured her it was safe.
She said: "He had told me about that idea, and I said, 'Don't do it".
Perez has a YouTube channel with many videos the couple made involving various stunts and pranks.
The channel remains live and has drawn millions of views since Ruiz's death.
Perez called 911, but medics couldn't do anything for Ruiz.
She added: "All the insane stuff will [be] on his channel and mine. will be our family life!"
