In the clip, the cast members, including Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen), Katherine Langford (Hannah Baker), Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis), and Justin Prentice (Bryce Walker), introduced themselves and later explained that 13 Reasons Why is a fiction that deals with the most unsettling and pressing issues nowadays. "The show clearly spoke to a lot of teenagers, and with a more refined message and a bit more care, season two has the potential to be what they need". In a bid to better understand the conversation surrounding the show between teens and parents, Netflix commissioned a global research study with Northwestern University's Center on Media and Human Development, "Exploring How Teens and Parents Responded to 13 Reasons Why". They note that while the issues addressed in the show are meant to start a conversation, the show might not be for some viewers who may be "struggling with these issues yourself".

In May, The Atlantic reported that the show will once again create a divide in its second season, especially if it approaches another dark subject.

More than 50% reached out to someone to apologize for how they had treated them. But the show was also hit with major criticism from mental health advocates for glamorizing suicide and significantly increasing searches around the topic online.

The show focuses on a teenage girl who kills herself and leaves behind a series of tapes implicating various classmates for their role in her death.

Despite being fiction, "13 Reasons Why" garnered real controversy from parents and critics, according to Variety.

"For the fans of the show, thank you for being part of this conversation". "I think at the end of the day people just want to troll, so I take it all in stride", he said. The after show Beyond the Reasons will also continue to explore themes of each episode, with help from "many actors, experts and educators".

"By shedding a light on these hard topics, we hope our show can help start a conversation, but if you are struggling with these issues yourself, this series might not be right for you, or you may want to watch it with a trusted adult", the new message at the start of the program, recited by the series' starring actors, states.
