Ecuador cuts off Julian Assange's internet at embassy

Ecuador Cuts Off Julian Assange's Outside Communication. Here's Why Ecuador cuts off Assange's communications from its London embassy
Scott Davis | 29 March, 2018, 02:28

Ecuador on Wednesday said it has stopped Julian Assange's ability to communicate to the outside world from its London embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder has been holed up since 2012.

Ecuador granted Assange political asylum in 2012, but the anti-secrecy activist has been living in virtual captivity at its embassy in London, as the British government has refused to give him safe passage to leave the country. Should Ecuador eject him from their embassy, he faces arrest by British authorities and possible extradition. Due to this, and in order to prevent potential prejudices, the embassy in London interrupted this 27 of May communications overseas which Assange had access to.

"The government of Ecuador warns that the behavior of Assange, with his messages through social networks, puts at risk the good relations the country maintains with the United Kingdom, with the rest of the states of the European Union and other nations", the government said in a statement Wednesday.

Mr Assange had signed a written agreement not to send any messages that might undermine Ecuador's relationships with other countries, it said.

Assange's last message on Twitter, which he uses often, was on Tuesday and made reference to a Guardian article in which a junior British foreign affairs official called him a "miserable little worm".

Assange argued that Sweden would eventually extradite him to the United States to face prosecution over WikiLeaks' publication of leaked classified military and diplomatic documents.

Kim Dotcom, a German internet tycoon who has always been vocal of his support for Assange's freedom, urged other supporters to gather outside the embassy on Wednesday to help Assange regain his Internet connection.

In 2016, Ecuador briefly suspended his internet connection for posting documents online that were seen as having an impact on the U.S. presidential election from which Donald Trump emerged the victor.

In May 2017, Ecuadoran President Lenin Moreno asked Assange to refrain from commenting on a separatist crisis in Spain over that country's Catalonia region, after he tweeted that Madrid was guilty of "repression".
