Trump defends Second Amendment a month after calling for gun confiscation

Former Supreme Court Justice Says We Should Repeal Second Amendment Gun safety groups not convinced by retired justice's call to repeal second amendment

Trump's statement also came in the wake of the national "March For Our Lives" student-led demonstration calling for more gun control in the United States, as well as a trending hashtag on Twitter yesterday that said "Repeal the Second Amendment".

John Paul Stevens (shown) is at it again, using his influence as a one-time U.S. Supreme Court justice to push a repeal of the Second Amendment and the effective ending of the God-given right of Americans to defend themselves from all sorts of dangers - including a tyrannical government.

"For over 200 years after the adoption of the Second Amendment, it was uniformly understood as not placing any limit on either federal or state authority to enact gun control legislation", Stevens wrote.

Republican President Donald Trump strongly supported the amendment during his 2016 election campaign, but following the Florida shooting has supported some gun control measures such as expanded background checks.

"Perhaps we need another two seats on the Supreme Court before we can make some headway in the way that we all, I think, would like", said Brandon Combs, president of the Firearms Policy Coalition.

Of course, like any right, the Second Amendment is subject to reasonable regulation to protect the community from risky abuses.

Never mind that leading Democrats aren't talking right now about repealing the Second Amendment.

What is somewhat new, however, is that the anti-2nd-Amendment folks are generally becoming less shy about their true aims regarding the Constitution. In 1999, for instance, a Hearst Newspapers poll found that 59 percent of respondents said they did not know the goal of the Second Amendment. His bold proposal has prompted many questions about whether such a fundamental change to the U.S. Constitution is legally - let alone politically - possible.

The Second Amendment states that "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed".

There is no current, major push to repeal the Second Amendment.

Those numbers are surprising given that virtually no political leaders in the country are publicly advocating for a repeal or modification of the Second Amendment. Just as the First Amendment protects modern communication and just as the Fourth Amendment applies to modern forms of search, the Second Amendment extends to guns that were not in existence at the time of the founding.

She was joined by political leaders, a police representative and teachers and students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were killed in a mass shooting February 14, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. He said repealing the provision would reduce gun violence. But if nothing else, Stevens's op-ed brings forth the conversation of how important the supposed unlimited right to own weaponry capable of mass murder really is.
