Mr. Sarkozy is suspected of using his influence in 2013 as a former head of state to help a senior French court official seek a plum job in Monaco.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, right, leaves the police station where he was held, in Nanterre, outside Paris, Wednesday March 21, 2018.

Mr Sarkozy, who is embroiled in several criminal investigations, denies any wrongdoing and has vowed to have all cases dismissed.

"Nicolas Sarkozy will. calmly wait for the result of the motion for a declaration of invalidity". Police detained him earlier this month and questioned him over separate allegations of illegal campaign funding from former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in his 2007 presidential election bid. "He does not doubt that once again the truth will triumph", the statement said.

According to prosecutors, Sarkozy's lawyer tried to get information from Azibert over the status of a campaign financing investigation.

The development came just over a week after the 63-year-old was told he was being formally treated as a suspect in the election campaign investigation. Jawhari was arrested on charges of Libyan funding of Sarkozy campaign in 2007.

Sarkozy's lawyer Thierry Herzog and former judge Gilbert Azibert must also stand trial in the case dating back to 2014, the source said, confirming a report in French daily Le Monde. It is unclear whether or not the Azibert ever provided the requested information, however, Azibert has been ordered to stand for trial alongside Sarkozy.

Mr Sarkozy is alleged to have accepted €50m (£43.8m) from Gaddafi's regime, claims which have been repeated by the dictator's son and French businessman Ziad Takieddine.

Influence-peddling can be punished in France by up to five years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros. As president, he would have been covered by immunity from prosecution for the length of his term.
