Leaked 'ugly truth' memo adds to Facebook's woes

Another day, another crisis for the social network.

I downloaded all my Facebook data. Here's how you can find the information: login to Facebook, click the drop-down arrow on the top right corner of your screen and click Settings.

"We've made a bunch of mistakes".

However a document obtained by the FT, sent from Aleksandr Kogan, the academic who built the app which was used to harvest data from 50 million accounts, informed Facebook of new terms.

Buzzfeed published the memo on Thursday, which was written by outspoken Facebook Vice President Andrew Bosworth.

For too many people considering leaping aboard the #DeleteFacebook bandwagon, the answer is simple: switch your photo and video sharing to Instagram and your messaging to WhatsApp.

"It's our responsibility to tell you how we collect and use your data in a language that's detailed, but also easy to understand".

Nathan Schneider, a professor of media studies at the University of Colorado, had a similar idea in 2016 when he proposed that Twitter users band together to buy the platform from its shareholders and convert it into a user-run collective, similar to the way a local credit union is run.

Sound familiar? It's Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressing a major privacy breach, seven years ago.

"Boz is a talented leader who says many provocative things".

"He could show that he takes democracy seriously enough to start with his own baby", Schneider said. On March 16, before Wylie's whistleblowing was made public, Facebook's share price was at $185.09. "The ugly truth is that we believe in connecting people so deeply that anything that allows us to connect more people more often is de facto good", the memo states. Many users find it intrusive and hard to disable. They also don't really have a higher goal other than their corporate bottom line, although they like to pretend otherwise - it makes it easier for them to both attract top talent and sleep at night.

"In the beginning, Facebook had a tremendous value in knowing those things they didn't otherwise know", Sanford said. However, in the context of the recent data collection scandal with Cambridge Analytica, the words seem far more ominous. But experimenting with more decentralized models could give social media users a sense that platforms represented their interests, rather than those of a faceless corporation. If you joined the company because it is doing great work, that's why we get to do that great work.

The Wall Street Journal reports that many popular apps are transmitting personalized Facebook data to dozens of advertising and internet companies, among them, Zynga's breakout game FarmVille. Older apps, by contrast, were eventually overrun with creeps and predators, no matter how well built they were.

These data brokers have troves of data on credit scores, family status, pet ownership and hobbies, which they glean from surveys, warranty cards, retail loyalty programs and other sources. Christopher Wylie, a former Cambridge Analytica employee who blew the whistle on his former employer, told a British parliamentary panel he "absolutely" believed that the Brexit campaign also mined Facebook data and used it to successfully win the 2016 referendum for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union.

"The social graph is changing the way the world works, " he says.
