Jurgen Klopp hails Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's development at Liverpool

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain celebrates after scoring goal against Manchester City during the Champions League quarter final Watch: Oxlade-Chamberlain Hits An Absolute Screamer To Send Anfield Into Raptures

Much criticism was made following the 24-year-old's £35m transfer from the Emirates to Anfield last summer as some believed he was not worth the price tag and that he never fully established himself in the Arsenal team.

"The manager (Klopp) has been pushing me all season and shouting at me for not taking the game by the scruff of the neck at times and providing those kinds of moments, being the one shooting and making the difference", Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted.

With the Merseyside Derby on the horizon, former Arsenal teammates Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been discussing why they both swapped the bright lights of the London for the vibrant city of Liverpool.

City's manager and players were dismissive of the effect of the Anfield atmosphere on their performance but that was contradicted by the England worldwide, who admitted he knew from experience with Arsenal how it can have a major influence.

The midfielder notched Liverpool's second in the midweek Champions League victory over City, scoring with a long-range thunderbolt as the Reds ran out 3-0 winners in the first leg. Where, at Arsenal, one good game may have been followed by three directionless performances, that trend needs to be reversed over the coming seasons. If you are the away team and the crowd gets going like that it is terrible.

"But we've got a great squad and I'm sure we can go there [to the Etihad Stadium] and put in a good performance". That gives you the opportunity to do things you're not used to, and that's what helped him.

"He was not coming here and saying 'come on, make the best of me, use me in the best way". At times it has gone against me because I can be hard on myself and beat myself up a bit. "It was always "I could do more" or 'I could have done something more". He also claimed Jürgen Klopp's team were ideally suited to the Champions League and the latter stages in particular.

It was the midfielder's delicious strike that was the pick of the lot, however, and Oxlade-Chamberlain was quoted by the Daily Star as he spoke of his delight at the goal that handed his side the initiative on the night. "[But] all players can improve".

"Now, he's flying, you can see the training at Liverpool that they must do".
