Police officials said that after the civilians were killed in the cross fire, the operation had to be called off for a brief time, to allow police and CRPF to disperse the mob that had gathered across the river.

Local residents started pelting security personnel with stones, leading to clashes, they said, adding that some civilians were injured.

Earlier, it was reported that two militants were killed in the encounter as the house in which the ultras were trapped was blasted by security forces.

Three security force personnel were injured in the initial exchange of firing. "After conducting thorough search of the debris and nearby areas, we could not recover the bodies of the militants", official sources told UNI. They said the militants were able to escape. She has also paid tributes to the Army jawan who lost his life in the said incident.

Another injured person, identified as 30-year-old Aijaz Palla, later succumbed in a hospital, a health official said. Witnesses added that an Army gunship helicopter was also used during the operation. Rao, who is survived by his parents, had joined the Army in 2012, a defence spokesman here said.

Another youth was shot dead by the government forces following clashes in Khudwani area of Kulgam today taking the death toll to four, reports said. The statement was silent on the death of the fourth civilian.

Meanwhile, the gun-fight outside the house where the militants were holed up continued with bullets flying in every direction, they said.

The killing of four civilians and injuring at least 70 people in Kulgam has evoked widespread protests in the length and breadth of Kashmir with Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) calling for complete shutdown on Thursday.

The latest killings came days after 13 militants, five civilians and three soldiers were killed in one of the most violent days in Kashmir in recent years on April 1.
