Kevin Durant knew for a fact he wouldn't be making max contract money when signing on with Golden State back in 2016, as there was no possible way under the current salary cap rules that the Warriors would be able to resign both Steph Curry and Durant to max deals while also having Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on the roster and trying to build a semi-decent championship bench.

Durant had re-signed with the Warriors at a discount last summer, signing a two-year deal worth $51 million to allow the team to re-sign players such as Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

Durant plans to give up a guaranteed $26.2 million for next season, but that figure remains modest for an National Basketball Association superstar. Last offseason, Durant took nearly $10 million less than what he could have earned on a max salary which allowed Golden State to resign role players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

Durant could once again sign a two-year deal with a one-year opt out, setting him up for a possible record setting five-year, $219 million contract next offseason, when the salary cap is expected to jump by almost seven percent.

Durant is earning much less than what a player of his caliber should be getting. "I'm sure here soon I'll want to sign a lo deal just to feel stable".

This time around, he likely won't take the big pay cut as there aren't incentives in doing so, according to Haynes.

He went on to help the Warriors win the 2017 National Basketball Association title, and he was named Finals MVP.

If Durant has no intentions of leaving the Bay Area, the Warriors are desperate to hold onto one of their stars, who is averaging 26.6 points, 5.4 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game this season. In this scenario, Durant could pick up the option in year three for $41 million, or sign a five-year, $228 million contract with a starting salary of around $39.4 million. Each year of his deal could escalate.
