The risk increases by 24 percent, the researchers write in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry, and is relative to the number and severity of brain injuries.
A link between brain injury and dementia has been confirmed by a study of nearly three million people.
"If someone has a traumatic brain injury or concussion, they need to strictly follow the protocols to leave the game and get the proper assessment and treatment that is necessary", Fann said.
After adjusting for medical, neurological and psychiatric illnesses, they found that compared with people who had never had a T.B.I., those who had had any were at a 24 percent increased risk for dementia, and those who had had five or more had almost triple the risk.
Suffering a severe concussion in your twenties increases the risk of developing dementia in the next 30 years by more than two thirds, a major study has warned. Even compared to that group, the TBI group had higher risk for dementia. But the risk increased significantly for people with multiple brain injuries, and for people who were in their 20s at the time for their first brain injury. A study of 3.3 million people in Sweden earlier this year showed similar results. According to the study authors, more than 50 million people every year experience a traumatic brain injury.
Their study covers a period of 36 years. Causes include road traffic accidents, falls, sporting accidents and assaults. "Our findings do not suggest that everyone who suffers a traumatic brain injury will go on to develop dementia in later life". Between 1999 and 2013, 126,734 people (4.5%) aged 50 or older were diagnosed with dementia.
Fann said it's important to recognize that most people who sustain a single concussion do not develop dementia.
However researchers in this study took account of other influences on dementia risk, like diabetes, heart disease, depression and substance abuse.
"Severe TBI is particularly frequent in young people, and it is concerning that the risk of dementia is particular high in relatively young persons who suffer TBI", said co-author Jakob Christensen, associate professor of neurology at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.
Fann said more research is needed to understand who is at greatest risk of dementia and what other factors contribute to that risk.
"Our analysis raises some very important issues, in particular that efforts to prevent traumatic brain injury, especially in younger people, may be inadequate considering the huge and growing burden of dementia and the prevalence of TBI worldwide", Fann said.
The authors note some limitations, including that the study included people taken from one country with a fairly similar ethnic population, so the findings can not be generalised to all ethnic groups in other countries.
