Fifty-seven escaped in the immediate aftermath and four years on, 112 are still being held - a global symbol of the Islamist insurgency that has devastated the region.

In December he says he is willing to negotiate with any "credible" Boko Haram leadership and if there is proof the girls are alive.

The Boko Haram conflict is in its tenth year, but shows little sign of ending. "But that does not set aside the need for all of them to be rescued by government".

"Four out of five processes that I was involved in, we came close to a swap deal, but government in most instances did not provide the platform I presented with the required expertise".

In a statement released on the eve of the April 14, fourth anniversary of the kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, the United Nations agency also said more than 1,000 children had been abducted and 1,400 schools destroyed by the terrorists in the region since 2013.

The cries for the release of the girls dogged the heels of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, and getting the girls released was one of the campaign promises of then APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

On some of the girls that were shown on video pledging loyalty and allegiance to the Boko Haram, the medical personnel said "it is normal that when someone finds himself in such kind of situation of captivity for that length of time, the person may one way or the other subscribe to what the person is doing either willingly or by coercion".

Every year on the anniversary of their daughters' disappearance, the parents gather in Chibok to pray for their safe return.

The figure includes the Chibok girls, a UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, said yesterday.

One hundred and seven were returned in mid-March.

On Saturday, the Chibok community held a service in commemoration of the mass abduction.

The President re-affirmed that the government remains focused and determined to see the girls return to their homes, urging the parents to be expectant of more good news in due course.

Buhari however admitted that they may be some delay in securing their release following setbacks in talks with the terrorists.

"Some of us have refused to give up HOPE that they can be brought back like their 107 peers".

Since the conflict started in northeastern Nigeria almost nine years ago, at least 2,295 teachers have been killed and more than 1,400 schools have been destroyed.

The 19-year-old was discovered with a four-month-old baby and a man she described as her husband near Boko Haram's Sambisa Forest enclave.

Amnesty International's Nigeria director, Osai Ojigho, said the Chibok abduction was a small part of a bigger issue.
