Jaguar Land Rover to shed 1000 temp workers

Jaguar Land Rover to cut jobs and production – and to blame Brexit Jaguar Land Rover to shed 1000 temp workers

Jaguar Land Rover is cutting 1,000 temporary jobs at its plant in Solihull because of "continuing headwinds" affecting the vehicle industry.

"On Monday [16 April 2018] we will be cascading our 18/19 production plans for the next fiscal year to our workforce".

Jaguar Land Rover would not confirm the number of jobs to be lost but said the changes would largely see agency staff not having their contracts renewed. "We are however continuing to recruit large numbers of highly-skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices as we are over-proportionally investing in new products and technologies". "Following a review of planned volumes, we are planning to make some temporary adjustments to the production schedule at Halewood in Q2".

An insider told Reuters that auto production at the company's factories in Solihull and Castle Bromwich would be cut, resulting in 1,000 agency workers losing their jobs. The company stressed it remains committed to its United Kingdom plants, having invested more than 4 billion pounds since 2010 to future-proof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models.

A source told new agency Reuters that 1,000 roles would be slashed as part of the moves. There are 3,200 people employed at the Castle Bromwich site and a further 10,000 at Solihull.

"With JLR's United Kingdom production facilities exporting around 75% of its vehicles and importing many parts from the European Union, this action is in part an effort to help mitigate potentially-costly tariffs, which could significantly damage its bottom line".

Jaguar sales are down 26 percent so far this year whilst Land Rover demand dropped 20 percent in its home market as buyers shun diesel, concerned over planned tax rises and possible bans and restrictions in several countries.

"More generally, I think it is a mistake for the green lobby to propose measures against diesel vehicles which are often less polluting than other vehicles, and where there are relatively easy fixes in place in order to reduce emissions".

The vehicle manufacturing giant, which is headquartered in Coventry, said it would be "reviewing its production schedules" in a move that could reportedly impact 1,000 temporary workers.
