An 8-year-old student took a kitchen knife to a central Minnesota elementary school and randomly attacked three other children Monday, authorities said.
Three students were wounded. He was interviewed and released to his parents.
The suspect was taken into custody by Sauk Rapids Police and due to his age, was later released to his parents.
This morning we had an unfortunate and scary incident that happened before school started.
Superintendent Bruce Watkins wouldn't say how old the child was that brought the knife, only that he is a student at Pleasantview.
Beise says that when officers arrived, the boy was in a counselor's office while the three children, who were not seriously hurt, were being treated by the school nurse. The official police report will be forwarded to the Benton County Attorney's Office for potential charges.
According to Sauk Rapids Police Chief Perry Beise, the children had "superficial wounds to the backs of their heads that needed to be stitched up". "I think they would look at it a little differently", a parent said. The school has just under 800 students. He said he didn't know if the boy had been bullied, or if he had mental health issues.
According to WCCO, children under the age of 10 can not be criminally charged. It's similar to a game of tag, but this game includes seniors playing ICE agents and other students play undocumented immigrants.
Watkins said the school made mental health counsellors available to students and staff. Classes went on as scheduled. There are approximately 790 students enrolled at the elementary school.
