Though there were a total of 10 accused in the case, only five were charge-sheeted by the NIA. Another accused Sunil Joshi was murdered during the probe.

Nine persons were killed after a powerful blast took place in the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad. The other two will now be freed from jail. He is now on bail in 2014 Samjhauta Express blast case.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "It (acquittal) is happening in each case since the government was formed four years ago.people are losing faith in the agencies".

"The original case by the CBI, which had gathered a lot of evidence and was progressing well, the then political leadership of the home ministry transferred the case from one central agency to another, handing the case to NIA". Two other accused, Sandeep V. Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra, both RSS activists, still elude the investigators.

The NIA had originally filed a chargesheet against ten accused slapping them with the charge of plotting and executive the bomb blast with the intention of avenging the terrorist attacks elsewhere. Five others were killed in Police firing that followed the blast.

Hours after delivering the Mecca Masjid blast verdict, special NIA judge Ravinder Reddy resigned on Monday, according to news agency ANI.

Patra demanded that Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi apologise for defaming Hindus. Interestingly, Swami Aseemanand is a former RSS member who had given a signed confession about his involvement.

As a result, Aseemanad was arrested by the CBI in 2010. Aseemanand allegedly retracted the statement later.

The case, which garnered a lot of public and media attention, was taken over by the NIA from the Rajasthan Anti-Terror-Squad (ATS), and was put through a fast track court after the BJP-led NDA government took command of the Centre in 2014. The BJP said it had exposed the Congress' appeasement politics and proved that there is "no such thing as saffron terror".

The NIA had placed heavy reliance on Aseemanand's confessional statement in which he had said that he made a decision to come clean was after meeting with one youth called Abdul Kaleem.

The trial lasted 11 years, and 224 witnesses were examined out of who 64 turned "hostile".
