Despite the pit stop, Linden was still able to finish the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon first in 2 hours 39 minutes 54 seconds. In Rio de Jainero in 2016, she finished 10th.

Kawauchi said he kept Toshihiko Seko, the last Japanese to win the Boston Marathon, in mind over the 42.195-kilometer race between the suburban town of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and Copley Square in Boston.

It was no coincidence that the elite runners who DNFed were the East Africans who don't train in cold, wet, and windy conditions and nearly never compete in them.

Linden did not take the lead until mile 22, but from there it was no contest as she ultimately won by five minutes over Sarah Sellers of the United States and Krista Duchene of Canada, who ran 2:44:04 and 2:44:20, respectively.

The Japanese won a New Year's Day marathon at Marshfield, Massachusetts and followed with triumphs in the Kitakyushu Marathon in Japan and Wanjinshi Marathon in Taiwan before his breakthrough Boston victory. Lisa Larsen Weidenback won it in 1985.

It's not hard to find heart-warming acts of sportsmanship at the Boston Marathon.

"I just feel like it's the time", the Bostonian said days before the race.

Linden's run was a memorable one not only for her triumph over the conditions, but also for her sportsmanship displayed on the course. "I'm thrilled", Linden said on the TV broadcast immediately after the race. Runners and spectators alike showed their resilience, and the crowds have grown in support of the marathon tradition in the heart of Boston. If you need something-block the wind, whatever, let me know.' And so she nudged me and she's like 'I'm going to hit the bathroom. "I slowed down, and looked back to make sure we could work together to get back in the group". The top 15 winners on the men's and women's sides will also receive financial prizes, with second-place finishers winning $75,000 and third-place finishers winning $40,000 each.

An incredible story gets even better.

The East Africans who have dominated the professional era of the race had their worst performance in decades: Kirui was the only Kenyan in the top ten for the mens race; defending champion Edna Kiplagat, who was ninth, helped prevent a shutout in the distaff division.

She said she enjoys trying new bourbons especially with "a strong and long finish, smooth with some heat but not a bite". “I have the utmost respect for who they are as athletes and as people.”.

This year 91 runners went to area hospitals after the race and 10 were still in the hospital on Tuesday morning according to the BAA.
