A medium-sized asteroid ringinged by Earth simply hours after being identified this weekend. First observed at Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on Saturday, April 14, 2018, the asteroid - which has been labeled 2018 GE3 - swept past us at about half the Earth-moon distance early Sunday morning according to clocks in North America.

Its closest indicate Earth was simply 119,500 miles (192,317 km) away. Inning accordance with NASA, hours later on, at about 5:59 a.m. EDT on April 15, the area rock passed even closer to the moon than it needed to Earth.

"If the asteroid had entered our atmosphere, a great portion of the space rock would have disintegrated due to friction with the air".

NASA has estimated that the asteroid is somewhere between 47 to 100 meters wide, meaning it is roughly 3.6 times the size of the one that cleared 2,000 square kilometers of the forest when it exploded over Russia's Tunguska region in Siberia in 1908. "Should the 2018 GE3 have impacted Earth, it would have caused a significant amount of damage, however, it would have been regional, not global damage", a space and weather website reported.

A newly discovered asteroid the size of a football pitch skimmed past alarmingly close to Earth - and scientists hadn't spotted it in advance.

There is nothing extraordinary about an asteroid passing by the Earth. The majority of take off high in the environment, or over an ocean, and for that reason do no damage. Not this time, however a Chelyabinsk-type occasion can plainly duplicate.

At 110 metres long, the asteroid would be nearly six times the length of the meteor that nearly wiped out Chelyabinsk. According to the database maintained by NASA, there are only three asteroids of a similar size or superior to have been so close since the beginning of the twentieth century.
