"Amazon and Best Buy have a long history of working together, and today we take our partnership to a new level", Bezos said in a joint statement.

In 2017, Amazon bought $3.2 million worth of ads from The Washington Post and spent $4.9 million "related to digital content", for a total of $8.1 million. Research has also indicated that Prime members spend about $1,300 per year on Amazon.com, $600 more than what the non-Prime Amazon customer spends. As of the end of September, Levin said Prime had an estimated 90 million US members alone. The membership generally costs $99 a year in the USA and lures people in with free two-day shipping and access to video and music streaming.

Prime benefits added within the past year include two-minute order fulfillment at Instant Pickup sites, Amazon Key in-home deliveries, and free access to Double Jeopardy!

"It would make flawless sense to us that there would be over 100 million global members, based not only on that number but everything we've seen since then", Levin said.

The fees are just one way Amazon makes money off the program.

Amazon Prime is still growing.

The new high in subscriptions at Prime, launched 13 year ago, was among milestones from 2017 shared by Bezos in the letter, a copy of which was filed with USA securities regulators.

The marketplace is an important business because it vastly expands Amazon's inventory and it's generally more profitable than its direct sales, since Amazon doesn't purchase the items itself. And in 2017 alone Amazon shipped over five billion items through it's Prime service. Having "high standards" is the key, he wrote.
