Area students to take part in national walkouts 19 years after Columbine

High school principals made a robo call to parents this week telling them the event planned by CHC Enough, a student-led anti-gun violence organization, would be viewed as a school disruption and violation of the Student Code of Conduct. In March, the Davis district advised students that they would be marked absent if they left class to participate in on-campus demonstrations - a stance that drew considerable criticism during a Davis school board meeting on April 5.

The gravity of the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, didn't hit Delaney Wilkinson until she had to write the names of the 17 students and adults who were killed in the attack. Students, however, were advised by administrators not to walk out of their respective schools on that day and most complied.

In a letter to other high schools in its suburban Denver district earlier last week, current Columbine principal Scott Christy and the principal at the time of the massacre, Frank DeAngelis, suggested students join their tradition rather than participating in a walkout, noting that April "has always been a time to respectfully remember our loss".

"Every other day can be a day to push for change", said Tyner, who wishes organizers of the national walkout had reached out to the Columbine community first.

The Dayton rally is one of more more than 2,000 simultaneous protests planned across the country Friday.

The walkout was conceived February 14, hours after bullets shattered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, leaving 17 dead and 17 more hurt, said Lane Murdock, a 16-year-old sophomore at Ridgefield High School in CT.

The National School Walkout was started by Lane Murdoch, a 16-year-old who grew up in CT just a few miles from Sandy Hook Elementary School - where 20 students were killed in a mass shooting in 2012.

Superintendent John Bowes set an email blast on Wednesday, noting "Students and adults in Davis and across the country continue to look for constructive ways to respond to and to process the recurring incidents of gun violence..." The protests were organized by four students from Ridgefield High School in CT.

"We need to do more to reach over the aisle and help people understand our position".

The campaign was coordinated by a group of high school students from Ridgefield, Conn., following the Parkland shooting.

Many students, Basilone said, used the walkout as an opportunity to miss class.

"If they decide to stay on campus and are not disruptive and re-enter the building cooperatively, that will likely be handled in the same manner as the walk out that occurred last month", Quattlebaum said.

"Honestly, I just think they're different approaches to the same problem", said Murdock.
