Police face torrent of abuse after Alfie's death

Alfie, who was born in May 2016, was first admitted that year to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, England, after suffering seizures and had been a patient ever since in what the hospital considered a "semivegetative state". Doctors treating him at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool have said further treatment is futile, and the toddler's life support was withdrawn Monday after a series of court rulings sided with the doctors and blocked further medical treatment. Evans, who earlier said doctors were wrong about Alfie's prognosis and threatened to resume the court battle over his care, pledged to work with hospital staff to give his son "dignity and comfort" in his final days.

"My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30 absolutely heartbroken", the boy's father Tom Evans wrote on Facebook.

"Our baby boy grew his wings tonight ..."

James, 20, posted a message on social media thanking everyone who supported the family through Alfie's illness and court fight.

The Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome offered to care for Alfie, although doctors who examined him said not much could be done but to make him comfortable.

His parents were fighting to take the boy to Italy for treatment after being advised there was nothing else that could be done.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the most senior Catholic cleric in England and Wales said it was right for a court to "decide what's best not for the parents, but for the child".

The months-long legal battle between Alfie's parents, backed by a Christian pressure group, and his doctors has drawn interventions from the pope and Italian authorities, who support the parents' desire to have their son treated in Italy.

Evans and Alfie's mother, Kate Jones, lost appeal after appeal in court for the right to take their 23-month-old son to a hospital that would continue his treatment for a degenerative neurological condition.

The boy went many hours without hydration and three days without any nutrition.

Alfie was born healthy but after making odd jerking movements at home and missing some key developments in early life, was taken into hospital.

The case had also drawn criticism of the British courts and health service from all over the world.

Italy has previously said it was granting citizenship to the toddler and an Italian defence ministry medical evacuation plane is on standby to fly Evans to Italy. He talked about his sadness and he talked about Alfie being embraced by the Lord in heaven.

Rallies in support of Alfie's parents have been held throughout the week in London, Washington, D.C., NY and the Vatican, with pilgrims gathering to pray the rosary in St. Peter's Square each night leading up to the toddler's death.

Thomas Evans had also met with the pope in the Vatican last week and asked him to "save our son".

But perhaps seeing that there was little opportunity left to fight for Alfie's rights and their right to take him overseas or take him home or sensing a need to appease the hospital to bring him home, Tom Evans struck a conciliatory tone.
