Governor says she plans to sign six-week abortion ban into law

A bill described by some observers as the most restrictive abortion legislation in the nation has been sent to the desk of Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The Iowa legislation has some exemptions, such as in the case of rape or incest or if a woman's life is at risk.

"The reality is, with new scientific methods, we know when the heart starts beating in an unborn child and ... we use when the heart stops to define when death occurs", Edler said.

Iowans are waiting to see if Gov. Kim Reynolds will sign the strictest abortion ban in the country into law.

The new bill will ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy. MS enacted a law earlier this year banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, but it's on hold after a court challenge.

But if this bill is approved, women in Iowa would not be able to have an abortion in the state if they find out later than six weeks of gestation.

"This should be deeply concerning to anyone who believes women should be allowed to make decisions about their bodies and control their destinies", Ms. Hogue said in a statement, "and we now look to the courts to defend our essential human rights".

Some Iowa Republican lawmakers hope that the legislation is eventually taken up by the Supreme Court as part of an effort to challenge Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide. Reynolds hasn't said whether or not she'll give her signature, but she did say, per The Associated Press: "I'm pro-life". Reynolds said. "For me, my faith leads me to protect every Iowan, no matter how small".

According to The Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights research group that previously operated under Planned Parenthood, in 2014 some 89 percent of Iowa counties had no clinics that provided abortions and 42 percent of the women in the state lived in those counties.

"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back", said Suzanna de Baca, chief executive of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

"However, this is bigger than just a law", she said.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland officials are still calling on the governor to veto the bill, which has received global attention.

Democrats in Iowa have criticised the "political" barriers to receiving abortions.

"This legislation affirms the scientific fact that human life begins at conception", the American Family Association, a pro-life Christian group in MS, said in a statement.
